The North Carolina Transportation Museum has several different volunter oppurtunities. Each group provides an invalauble service to the NC Transportation Museum and its mission to promote Transportation History throughout North Carolina. Listed below are the available volunteering Oppurtinities.No experience is necessary for any of the volunteer groups. We will provide all training.
Rail Operations: Help restore and maintian our antique Rail Equipment. Become a brakeman, conductor, and Engineer on our onsite trian ride. Must be 18 years or older and possess a valid drivers license.
Interpretive Volunteer: Provide guided tours to our visitors, dress in costume as a roaming host greeting visitors, Narrate the onsite train ride, help with day to day administration tasks, help out during special events, help develop fun educational programming for school groups, scouting groups, and much much more. Must be 18 years or older.
Automotive Volunteers: Help restore, maintian and excersise our Antique automobile collection. Help drive our collection in parades and outreach programs. Must be 18 years or older and possess a valid drivers license.
Junior Volunteer: Help narrate the on site train ride, work craft and tattoo areas during special events, help out with administration needs. Must be 12 years or older.

The Mission Statement of the NC Transportation Museum and Foundation
The Mission of the North Carolina Transportation Museum and Foundation at Historic Spencer Shops is to preserve and interpret the history of transportation in North Carolina and to present this history in a manner which allows visitors to enjoy their experience as well as learn from it.
Objectives related to the mission are: · To preserve the buildings and other historic features of Spencer Shops · To interpret the history of the Southern Railway repair facility, the community and the people who were associated with it. · To operate an on-going program of transportation artifact restoration and conservation.Description
The North Carolina Transportation museum is dedicated to preserving the history of all transportation in NC. The museum is located on a former steam repair facility for Southern Railway, known as Spencer Shops. The museum has 57 acres and three exhibit buildings currently open to the public. The exhibits include Wagons Wheels and Wings, Bumper to Bumper, and the Roundhouse. We have one of the largest operational roundhouses in the United States. Our museum is volunteer run and driven.
