Friends of Unwanted Rabbits has been finding homes for rescued rabbits since 2004. We are dedicated to finding forever, loving, indoor homes for abandoned and neglected rabbits discarded at the Bradshaw Animal Shelter.

Rabbit Care Volunteers are needed to care for our rescued rabbits housed at the Petco in Folsom. Volunteers will get the rabbits out of their cages and put them in x-pens to play and exercise. They will clean the cages, litter boxes, refill food, hay and water. Rabbit Care Volunteers also sit with the rabbits and socialize with them by petting them, playing with them and grooming them. Volunteers generally clean one bank of 3 cages with 3 rabbits but opportunities are available to care for more than 3 rabbits if a volunteer chooses. Training is provided. Children under 18 can volunteer with a parent.

Foster Parents are needed to care for rabbits that are rescued from the shelter, in their home until we have space available at Petco or the rabbit is adopted to a new home. Fosters transport their foster rabbit too and from Vet appointments for spay/neuter and if the rabbit has a medical need. These costs are paid for by TEAM-FUR. Fosters will socialize their foster rabbit and bring them to adoption events held at Petco. Previous rabbit experience is preferred but not required. A minimum 6 month commitment is required to foster a rabbit.

Additional Volunteer Opportunties include Grant writing, transporting rabbits to and from Veterinary appointments, Assisting at Rabbit Adoption Events, Fundraising, Photography, and photocopying educational rabbit care handouts, Graphic Design, Artistic crafters and sewers to make bunny blankets and items for the rabbits for fundraising.

Mission Statement

FUR MISSION STATEMENT

OUR MISSION IS TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO MAKE THE MORE COMPASSIONATE CHOICE BY ADOPTING A RESCUED RABBIT OVER BUYING ONE FROM A BREEDER. WE STAND FOR KINDNESS AND HUMANE TREATMENT FOR ALL ANIMALS AND ARE AGAINST THE USE OF RABBITS FOR MEAT, FUR AND LABORATORY TESTING.

OUR GOALS ARE TO:
  • Increase the adoption rate of rabbits discarded at the Sacramento County Animal Shelter.
  • Increase public awareness of these highly intelligent social creatures as house pets.
  • Educate the public on proper rabbit care.
  • Decrease the overpopulation of rabbits through spaying and neutering.
  • Find forever loving indoor homes for rabbits.

Description

WHO IS FUR? FRIENDS OF UNWANTED RABBITS (FUR) IS A RABBIT RESCUE ORGANIZATION FOUNDED IN 2004.

WE ARE DEDICATED TO FINDING FOREVER, LOVING, INDOOR HOMES FOR ABANDONED AND NEGLECTED RABBITS DUMPED AT LOCAL AREA SHELTERS. OUR GOAL IS TO INCREASE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THESE INTELLIGENT, SOCIAL CREATURES AS HOUSE PETS. WE ARE COMMITTED TO IMPROVING THE LIVES OF COMPANION RABBITS THROUGH EDUCATION ON PROPER RABBIT CARE. WE SUPPORT SPAYING/NEUTERING RABBITS TO IMPROVE OVERALL HEALTH, BEHAVIOR AND TO DECREASE OVERPOPULATION.

WHY DOES FUR EXIST? EACH YEAR THOUSANDS OF RABBITS ARE ABANDONED AT LOCAL AREA SHELTERS.

RABBITS ARE THE 3RD MOST FREQUENTLY DISCARDED ANIMALS AT SHELTERS AND THE MOST OFTEN OVERLOOKED. MOST ARE DISCARDED BY THEIR OWNERS DUE TO A LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND KNOWLEDGE OF THESE HIGHLY INTELLIGENT CREATURES. OTHERS ARE DUMPED BY IRRESPONSIBLE BREEDERS. IN THE RECENT PAST 100% OF THE RABBITS DISCARDED AT THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY ANIMAL CARE & REGULATION WERE EUTHANIZED. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, FUR HAS RESCUED OVER 1276 RABBITS AND DECREASED THE EUTHANASIA RATE TO LESS THAN 1%.

WHAT DOES FUR DO? FUR RESCUES RABBITS ABANDONED AT THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY ANIMAL CARE & REGULATION.

RABBITS ARE SPAYED/NEUTERED AND PLACED IN TEMPORARY FOSTER HOMES WHERE THEY RECEIVE MUCH NEEDED TLC WHILE THEY RECOVER. ALL RABBITS ARE LITTER BOX TRAINED, AND SOCIALIZED BEFORE BEING HOUSED AT PETCO ADOPTION CENTER, LOCATED AT 855 EAST BIDWELL STREET IN FOLSOM, CA. SOME OF OUR RABBITS STAY IN FOSTER HOMES UNTIL THEY ARE ADOPTED AND ARE NOT HOUSED AT PETCO DUE TO THEIR SIZE AND/OR SPECIAL NEEDS. VOLUNTEERS CARE FOR THE RESCUED RABBITS HOUSED AT PETCO AND PROVIDE EXERCISE AND SOCIALIZATION TIME OUTSIDE THEIR CAGES. THE RABBITS ARE ADOPTED TO CAREFULLY SCREENED INDOOR HOMES BY FUR VOLUNTEERS.

HOW DOES FUR SURVIVE? FUR IS RUN BY A GROUP OF DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS AND IS SUPPORTED BY TEACHING EVERYONE ANIMALS MATTER.

TEAM IS A NONPROFIT 501(C)(3) CORPORATION FORMED TO HELP SACRAMENTO COUNTY ANIMAL CARE & REGULATION. THE FRIENDS OF UNWANTED RABBITS IS DEPENDENT UPON GENEROUS DONATIONS FROM THE PUBLIC. CONTRIBUTIONS TO FUR ARE USED FOR SPAYING/NEUTERING, MEDICAL CARE AND FOSTERING EXPENSES.
