AFS support and coordinates 50 local SF Bay Area students to study abroad every year. AFS standards require all AFS study abroad program candidates have an interview as part of the application process.

These interviews mean:

  • Assess the readiness of the candidate for a positive AFS experience, by verifying the student exhibits the Hallmarks of Successful Sending Participants and identifying any potential Red Flags.
  • Provide insight into the student’s personality and interests to aid the volunteers in the host country in selecting a host family for the student.
  • Foster a sense of the study abroad community and affiliation with the local team
  • Complete the Sending Interview Form, which is a part of the online application to evaluate applicants' eligiblilty for AFS programs.
  • Become familiar with the Frequently Asked Questions about Study Abroad page, or be able to refer to it during the interview as necessary.

This position is perfect for anyone with past study abroad expereince!

Volunteers in this role will register as an AFS Volunteer, do an online training, and will be partnered with an experienced volunteer (as appropriate).

We’ve been exchanging students throughout the world for more than 65 years. That’s six decades of history and experience in international education with an exemplary record of safety, security, and service to students, parents, and educators.
