SOHO- Space of His Own is seeking mentors for the 2016-2017 school year.

Space of His Own serves 5th-grade disadvantaged youth in Alexandria, VA. We pair strong, compassionate and resourceful men with program participants to help them navigate their sometimes turbulent lives. More than a role model, and more than a friend, a SOHO mentor helps guide youth to success.

SOHO-Space of His Own mentors and youth meet weekly in a group setting to enjoy dinner together and work on an arts-based or carpentry project. Each mentor is paired one-on-one with a child as they construct a chest, participate in clay-making, build shelves, and much more. Mentors and mentees also participate in a series of team-building exercises to help develop the SOHO community.

At the culmination of the year, mentors pair up to renovate each boy's bedroom or space using all of the projects that they've built together throughout the year.

The program begins September 2016 and runs through June 2017. Mentors meet with mentees one night a week from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. The night of the week is TBD.

If you are hardworking, dedicated, and eager to help a child in need, we want to hear from you.

Mission Statement

SOHO-Space of His Own serves 5 th grade at-risk boys from the Alexandria and Arlington communities once a week with a life skills class, dinner and a creative arts/carpentry class. SOHO’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty and to provide low-income, underserved and at-risk youth the skills they need to flourish.

Description

Our program combines one-on-one mentoring with life-skills and arts/carpentry classes, culminating at the end of the year in a personalized room renovation. The life-skills classes include topics such as healthy eating, bullying, drug prevention, and career goals. The workshops at SOHO teach boys practical skills and allow them to explore their creativity. The lasting on-on-one relationships between a mentor and a mentee are proven to increase positive decision-making skills and self-esteem in youth, and through Space of His Own, we aim to help our boys develop the confidence to take charge of their lives.

This unique mentoring opportunity is a fantastic way to give back to the community, especially when volunteering with a friend. Invite your friends, family and acquaintances to learn more about SOHO.

Our orientations will begin in January 2015. For more information, please contact Haley Bader at haley@spaceofherown.org.
