Volunteers need no previous experience with horses or special needs children to contribute their time to our program. You must attend a two hour orientation, held by one of our PATH certified instructors who will teach you the basic skills of what task needs to be performed. Some of the tasks given to volunteers include grooming and preparing horses before their lessons and leading or side-walking during lessons.
If you’d prefer, there is also plenty of work to be done around the barn that does not require handling horses.

Special Spirit is a small but growing nonprofit that utilizes the transformative potential of horse-related learning and treatment modalities to improve the quality of life for underserved children and adults with a diverse range of mental and physical health challenges. Through our primary programs, Therapeutic Riding, Special Spirit changes lives, one person at a time, with this high impact, experiential treatment solution for children and adults challenged by autism, cerebral palsy, or other special needs or disabilities.
