The living allowance is subject to federal taxes; you may also be required to pay state taxes, however, they will not be taken out of each check, and rather are assessed via the year-end tax process.
Health Benefit - All VISTAs receive a basic health benefit at no charge. This benefit is only available to the VISTA. Additional details can be found at http://americorps.sevencorners.com/.

Education Award or Cash Stipend - After completion of a successful term of service, AmeriCorps VISTAs are eligible for either a $5,550 education award (can only earn two) or a cash stipend of $1500. Both are taxed, the education award upon use, and the cash stipend upon provision.
Loan Forbearance or Deferment - VISTA members are potentially eligible for loan forbearance, interest payment, and/or some federal loan cancellation. It is the VISTA member’s responsibility to determine their loan eligibility for these benefits; not all loan providers recognize AmeriCorps service as a viable reason for forbearance or deferment - many private loans do not. Candidates should contact their loan providers before beginning service.
