SSP Student with Mentor

Student Sponsor Partners (SSP) is a nonprofit harnessing the power of quality education and mentorship to help low-income and academically at-risk students escape the cycle of poverty and reach their highest potential. SSP is currently looking for NYC-based volunteers to mentor students for our incoming Class of 2024 throughout high school.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we can't predict what the upcoming school year will look like. Schools may schedule students to attend classes in shifts. Students may be required to stay socially distant from classmates at all times. Distance learning could continue into September. However, one thing we know for certain is that our freshmen will need mentors like you to help them acclimate to the academic and social challenges of starting high school at this uncertain time.

Role of Mentors:
SSP mentors make a positive impact in their students' lives by supporting their mentees as they face new challenges, pushing them to expand their horizons, and encouraging them to set themselves up for success in college and beyond.

Commitment:
SSP mentors are typically required to meet with their students at least 6 times per year in person and maintain phone contact monthly, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, we're asking pairs to speak twice a month through phone or video chat while staying in touch via text in between. Mentors must reside in the NYC area.

Application Process:
1. Submit your Mentor Application: This online form should take 7-10 minutes to finish.
2. Complete a background check: Once we receive your application, you'll be asked to consent to a background check to ensure the safety of our students.
3. Attend a Virtual Mentor Training
4. Meet your mentee: SSP will search for the right student for you to mentor based on your gender, location, experiences, and personality. Over the summer, you will be virtually introduced to your mentee and their parents.
