ORGANIZATION: Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County

Help SVdP provide clothing to those in need!

St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County's Community Center connects clients with direct services, including access to free, gently-used clothes. By sorting and organizing donations, you will help SVdP distribute clothing to adults and children.

Volunteers will be asked to:

  • Check all clothes to make sure that they are gently-worn;
  • Determine the proper destination of the incoming donations - either to our free Clothing Closet, which is utilized by our adult clients, the children's room in our Women's Center, or to one of our three thrift stores (out-of-season or very dressy clothes);
  • Sort clothes by gender and type or size; and
  • Tidy up and help to restock the Clothing Closet or children's room.

Time: 2-3 hour shifts are available between 9am and 1pm Tuesday - Saturday

Commitment: One time and ongoing volunteers are welcome. This is a great group service opportunity for six to eight people.

Volunteers will attend an orientation and receive training on their first day of service.

Mission Statement

St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County is dedicated to serving the men, women and children of Alameda County.

Description

A non-profit, community-based organization, St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County (SVdP) offers emergency and social safety net services to its neighbors, relying on a vast network of volunteers to carry out our mission. We operate a free dining room, thrift stores, an e-waste recycling program, men and women's drop-in centers, workforce and culinary training programs and much more. St. Vincent de Paul serves everyone regardless of origin, creed, or affiliation. Our staff and volunteers are a diverse and talented group, representing a wide range of experiences and perspectives.

St. Vincent de Paul was founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam, a 20-year-old student of the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. Similar groups began to form in Paris, then spread throughout France, and eventually throughout the world.

Volunteers, known as Vincentians, are united in an international society of charity by their spirit of poverty, humility, and sharing. St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County was founded in 1938, and has been serving the community of Oakland ever since.
