Imagine if you struggled to navigate this website, to write out an inquiry about volunteering, to read this very sentence. But the skills that allow you to handle these daily tasks with ease are the same skills that can, when shared with an adult learner, help to change lives.

Seeds of Literacy, an award-winning nonprofit organization that provides free GED prep and basic education to adults in the Cleveland area, has an urgent need for people just like you to volunteer as adult literacy tutors. The shocking truth is that 66% of adults in Cleveland are functionally illiterate, and may struggle with everyday necessities like reading a bus schedule and understanding medication labels.

This is where you can make a very real difference.

The donation of your time, skills, and patience as a tutor can make a life-changing impact for an adult learner right in our community.

  • work one-to-one with students to improve reading, writing, and math skills,
  • offer encouragement and support
  • help students develop positive attitudes towards learning

We ask that tutors can commit to attending one class session per week for one year. Classes are two hours long, and we offer a flexible class schedule with sessions scheduled throughout the day to accommodate personal preference and availability.

We have two locations to serve our community.

Seeds West:
3104 W. 25th Street, 3rd Floor
(corner of W. 25th & Clark Avenue)
Cleveland, OH 44109

Seeds East:
13815 Kinsman Road
(corner of Kinsman & E. 139th)
Cleveland, OH 44120

Both sites have free, secure parking and are on major bus lines.

One training is all it takes to get started! Our next tutor training will be:
Friday, November 11th, 2016 - at Seeds East
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

You can tutor at whichever location you prefer. Training location does not affect where you tutor.

If you’re ready to make a difference by changing one life at a time, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Alexandria Marshall at 216.661.7850 or
