Got a soft spot for sentence composition? Love long division or adore algebra? How about sharing your everyday reading, writing, and math skills with a dedicated adult learner in your community?
Seeds of Literacy, an award-winning nonprofit organization that provides free GED prep and basic education to adults in the Cleveland area, has an urgent need for people just like you to volunteer as adult literacy tutors. The shocking truth is that an estimated 66% of adults in Cleveland are functionally illiterate, and may struggle with everyday necessities like reading a bus schedule and understanding medication labels.
This is where you can make a very real difference! Tutors work one-to-one with students to improve reading, writing, and math skills, offer encouragement and support, and help students develop positive attitudes towards learning.
Generally we ask that tutors come to one class session per week for one year. We can, however, make accommodations for those with special circumstances.
Classes are two hours long, and we offer a flexible class schedule with sessions scheduled throughout the day to accommodate personal preference and availability.
Our classroom is closed due to COVID 19. We have two locations to serve our community: Seeds West 3104 W. 25th Street, 3rd Floor (corner of W. 25th & Clark Avenue) Cleveland, OH 44109 Seeds East 13815 Kinsman Road (corner of Kinsman & E. 139th) Cleveland, OH 44120 Both locations have free, secure parking and are on major bus lines. Join us in our Virtual Classroom. Classes are three times a day, Monday through Thursday.
You don’t have to be an educator to help - we’ll train you. You can attend an online training each Monday from 11am-12:30 pm on Zoom. To start the process, please complete the Volunteer Application: https://www.seedsofliteracy.org/volunteer-application/

Seeds of Literacy provides personal education that empowers adults to succeed in their communities.
Seeds of Literacy brings together people of diverse backgrounds in order to help break a root cause of poverty: illiteracy.
Since 1997, Seeds of Literacy has provided free, one-to-one tutoring in basic education and GED preparation to adults in Cuyahoga County. A unique curriculum designed and developed by Seeds of Literacy and one-to-one tutoring optimize learning by building relationships of trust between the student and the tutor. Since this approach allows each student to work at her or his own pace and academic level while receiving personal attention and encouragement, students of all academic levels may be able to participate in the program.
Seeds has student retention and graduation rates that are twice the national average, is the only adult literacy program in the county to be nationally accredited by ProLiteracy, and is a 501(c)3 organization.
Seeds of Literacy: - is free to students - has year-round, open enrollment - offers a flexible class schedule - provides one-to-one tutoring for maximum learning - offers additional training in computer skills and career planning - has over 200 active volunteer tutors in 2013 - serves more than 1,000 adult students annually - is the recipient of the 2013 Anisfield-Wolf Memorial Award for outstanding service to the community - is accredited by ProLiteracy, part of the largest adult literacy organization worldwide
