Bring joy and magic to sick kids

Open Heart Magic (OHM) is a nonprofit organization that brings the joy of magic to sick kids in hospitals. As a volunteer Hospital Magician, you’ll bring laughter and wonder to kids who need it during the most critical point in their medical treatment.

While OHM began in Chicago, we are currently recruiting for top-notch folks to help us grow a new program at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, which means you’ll be supported by an incredible community of 150 Hospital Magicians already serving in 12 hospitals across the region.

Last year, our amazing Hospital Magician’s reached over 11,000 kids one-on-one at their bedside. You can be part of the amazing community in Ann Arbor and help bring this wonderful service to sick kids and their families in the area.

Our Hospital Magicians tell us that their hospital visits are the best part of their week. They say that - after a visit - they walk away energized and inspired knowing that they were able to provide such a powerful experience for these kids. As a Hospital Magician, not only will you perform magic one-on-one at kids’ bedsides, you’ll also empower them by teaching them a magic trick. It’s not uncommon for our Hospital Magician’s to hear from a parent or nurse that, because of the magic, it was the first time the kid smiled or laughed all day.

You don’t need to know magic to be a Hospital Magician. You just need to be committed to learning the magic techniques that we will teach you.

Magic University consists of in-class training one evening a week for 12 weeks, online video support and practice on your own. The magic routines taught are professional level, extremely visual and astonishing, yet can be learned in a shorter time due to our experienced magician trainers, all who are active Hospital Magicians.

Magic University will be held once this year during late Summer/early Fall. Since this is a new program, spots will be limited and recruitment will be highly selective.

The Bedside Magic program at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital offers service weeknight evenings starting at approximately 5:30PM. As a Hospital Magician, you will visit kids every other week. Each visit to the hospital lasts approximately 120 - 150 minutes.

  • Weeknight availability
  • Dedicated, high energy, fun, outgoing individuals with a sense of humor,
  • Sensitivity and social skills to work with kids and families who are going through a difficult time.
  • Performance experience, presentation skills, business facilitation or any similar activity is highly regarded.
  • Previous experience in volunteering is highly regarded.
  • An interest in learning magic, as this art requires dedication to learn and practice skills
  • Your commitment to learning to become a Hospital Magician and to being present at all scheduled service times is paramount.

These kids will be depending on you to come and do magic. A commitment of at least one year of service is required - due to the extensive training investment required to prepare you to skillfully and confidently perform close-up magic. You will need to consistently provide service every other week as part of the program. Turnover is extremely low and these positions are valued.

The Hospital Magician role is unlike any other in the world and, while incredibly rewarding, we do expect a lot from our volunteers. All of our volunteers are required to have a consistent and stable schedule that ensures all nights of service are met and the flexibility to attend extracurricular events. While this may seem strict, it's all done to ensure kids consistently see magic and the volunteer has an incredible experience.

Therefore, please do not apply if you travel often, have an unpredictable schedule or are currently in school.

Thanks for checking out the opportunity to help kids. We really look forward to speaking with you!

Mission Statement

To use the power of magic and laughter to energize and strengthen seriously ill children in Chicago area hospitals and aid their healing. To reach young patients one-by-one regardless of their disease, medical situation or physical ability so that all children may benefit from this engaging and entertaining therapy. To help sick kids in hospitals get their magic back.

Open Heart Magic (OHM) is a Chicago based 501(c)(3) Children's Foundation that brings hope to children struggling in hospitals, reinvigorating their youthful enthusiasm and helping them get better.

Our specially trained volunteer hospital magicians visit children and teens in pediatrics one-by-one and use magic as a tool to interest, actively engage and empower kids trying to deal with their situations and their negative feelings associated with their illnesses and hospital stays. The power of the interaction creates feelings of being special, reengages their curiosities, and gives them a greater sense of control not only from creating the magic with the magician but also from learning a magic trick, something that even their doctors do not know how to do.

In 2015, one-on-one Bedside Magic reached over 9,400 kids at their hospital bedsides.
