Open Heart Magic
Bring joy and magic to sick kids

Open Heart Magic (OHM) is a nonprofit organization that delivers laughter, hope, and strength to sick kids in hospitals. As a volunteer Hospital Magician, you’ll bring joy and wonder to kids who need it most.

While OHM is based in Chicago, we are currently recruiting top-notch folks to help us grow our program at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. Over the years, Bedside Magic has delivered magic to tens of thousands of kids. You can be part of the stellar community in Ann Arbor and help bring this wonderful service to sick kids and their families.

Our Hospital Magicians tell us that their hospital visits are the best part of their week. They say that - after a visit - they walk away energized and inspired knowing that they were able to provide such a powerful experience for these kids. As a Hospital Magician, not only will you perform magic one-on-one at kids’ bedsides, you’ll also empower them by teaching them a magic trick. It’s not uncommon for our Hospital Magician’s to hear from a parent or nurse that, because of the magic, it was the first time the kid smiled or laughed all day.

You don’t need to know magic to be a Hospital Magician. You just need to be committed to learning the magic techniques that we will teach you.

Magic University consists of in-class training one evening a week for 12 weeks, online video support and practice on your own. The magic routines taught are professional level, extremely visual and astonishing, yet can be learned in a shorter time due to our experienced magician trainers, all who are active Hospital Magicians.

Currently, Magic University will take place early 2022. Spots will be limited and recruitment will be highly selective.

With Bedside Magic returning in a phased approach to hospitals in Chicago and Cleveland we are beginning to recruit for service at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. As we adhere to and follow the COVID-19 safety guidelines our program at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital will return and continue to grow. As a Hospital Magician, you will commit to visiting kids once every other week on a set day and time, with each visit lasting approximately 2 hours.

  • Weeknight Availability
  • Dedicated, high energy, fun, outgoing individuals with a sense of humor
  • Interest in learning magic, and commitment to master this art
  • Sensitivity and social skills to work with kids and families
  • Any performance experience is highly regarded
  • Previous experience in volunteering is highly regarded

These kids will be depending on you to come and do magic. A commitment of at least one year of service is required - due to the extensive training investment required to prepare you to skillfully and confidently perform close-up magic. You will need to consistently provide service every other week as part of the program. Turnover is extremely low and these positions are valued.

The Hospital Magician role is unlike any other in the world and, while incredibly rewarding, we do expect a lot from our volunteers. All of our volunteers are required to have a consistent and stable schedule that ensures all nights of service are met and the flexibility to attend extracurricular events. While this may seem strict, it's all done to ensure kids consistently see magic and the volunteer has an incredible experience.

Therefore, please do not apply if you travel often, have an unpredictable schedule or are currently in school.

Due to the sensitive nature of service, Open Heart Magic and the hospitals require applicants to be at least 21 years of age.

A COVID-19 and yearly flu vaccination are required to ensure the health and safety of all patients, families, and volunteers.
