He'eia Estuary Restoration

The He'eia Estuary Restoration Project is aimed at improving water quality and increasing habitat for native aquatic animal species by removing invasive plants and replanting native Hawaiian species along a portion of the He'eia Stream estuary.

The work takes place at the mouth of He'eia Stream in an approximately four acre area, located at He'eia State Park, dominated by non-native species including mangrove and hau bush where both species have encroached on the stream corridor and made it nearly impassable.

Invasive plant species from the site are being chipped and composted on site. This re-use of organic material aids in weed suppression, limits exposure and erosion of bare soils and adds nutrients to the soil to prepare for the out-planting of native species during monthly volunteer workdays. Native plant species will aid in erosion control, filtration of storm water runoff and provide habitat for native species.

Our community workdays and volunteer events happen rain or shine! In the rare event that we would need to cancel a workday due to unsafe weather conditions, we will update our Facebook Page with the event status no later than one hour prior the scheduled start time.

We offer a variety of regularly scheduled events each month and we can work with groups to arrange a private weekday service trip or educational visit.

The workdays at the He’eia Estuary Restoration Project are every 3rd Saturday of the month; the dates for the rest of the year are: Aug. 20, Oct. 15, Nov. 19. We won’t have a workday in September or December.

Requirements

* Closed-toe shoes are required

* Please wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting VERY wet & muddy

* Participants under age 16 must have adult supervision.

* Participants under the age of 18, attending without their parent or legal guardian must bring the signed waiver, all others will sign the waiver upon arrival.

To Bring: Bring a water bottle and sun/rain protection. Closed-toe shoes are required. Please wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting VERY wet & muddy. Bring a towel or change or clothes & a bag for the dirty stuff!
