Over the course of 4 weeks, students ages 7-12 will join us in our Mar Vista and Echo Park writing labs for "English Language Learner Camp" to work on their English language skills and become confident writers, enthusiastic readers, and strong communicators.

Each week's activities and writing will be based on themes, including food, arts and culture, science, nature, and time travel. Students will work in small groups with amazing volunteers like you. At the end of the camp, each student and volunteer will leave with their very own published compendium of student-written stories.

While this program is designed for students classified as English language learners level 3 and below, no Spanish language skills and no experience working with English language learners necessary.

We'll have two sessions per day (a morning session 10:30AM-1PM and an afternoon session 3-5:30PM), Mondays through Thursdays at both our Mar Vista and Echo Park locations.

Volunteers must attend a Volunteering 101 orientation and complete a background check. Get started here: 826la.org/volunteer.

About 826LA

Location:

1714 W. Sunset Blvd., LOS ANGELES, CA 90026, US

Mission Statement

826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind, we provide after school tutoring, reading and creative writing workshops, in-schools projects, and field trips! All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in their individual voice. We have two brick and mortars in Mar Vista and Echo Park, as well as three Writers Rooms at Roosevelt High School, at Manual Arts High School, and at Venice High School.

Description

We have a high need for volunteers to support our day time Field Trips and In-Schools programs. You can help facilitate brainstorming sessions and share-outs, type up student ideas, and support the editing process. You'll also have the opportunity to work one-on-one or with a small group of students, on various writing projects ranging from personal statement essays, Catcher in the Rye essays, poetry, creative writing, and everything in between.
