Volunteers provide tutoring and encouragement for adults who would like to develop skills in reading comprehension, writing and basic mathematics. They assist English language learners, adult basic education learners and individuals who are preparing for exams (e.g. GED Test and U.S. Naturalization Test) with learning activities. Volunteers must be well-rounded academically and have strong English and math skills (up to the eighth grade level). They also must be able to assist learners in small groups and individually on a drop-in basis.
Tutors are scheduled once a week for at least six months. Desired qualifications and skills include: college graduate; a friendly demeanor and communication skills; fluency in written and spoken English; proficiency in basic mathematics; patience and a willingness to use a variety of methods to promote understanding with students; respect of diverse cultures and values.
