There are more than 11,000 children in New York State whose mothers are imprisoned. The absence of their mother leaves them vulnerable, particularly the older children, who face increased risk of involvement with crime substance abuse and other anti-social behaviors. Without good care and attention, they become victims of the prison system. The core of Hour Children’s work is to reverse this outcome.
Hour Friends in Deed mentoring program provides a child, between the ages of 4-17, with a caring adult who commits to building a healthy relationship with a young person. The mentor becomes someone that supports and guides the child with positive academic, career, and personal goals.
We encourage mentors and mentees to find fun activities to do together. Both of you can pick to play sports, go to the movies, do arts & crafts, or any activity where you both will have FUN! Your positive influence will contribute to the growth and development of this child.
We specifically need mentors for children who live in Staten Island. Each mentor, 18 years or older, commits to participate in the program for one year and to meet with his/her mentee for at least 4 hours per month. Become a mentor. Be part of the solution and make an impact on a child’s life!!!!
