Our Herd

Chakota needs volunteers who are willing to commit to be a member of a team for a rider during therapy sessions. You do not have to have experience with horses. Sessions are weekly and last one hour. You must be able to keep pace with a horse during this time but it is okay to take breaks. We will work with you. We also have other opportunities for those who are not able to keep up with the horse. It's a much more rewarding work out and less expensive than a gym membership.

We are also looking for those who have experience handling a horse. Volunteers are required to get each horse ready before the lesson. In addition to getting horses ready we also need volunteers who can lead the horses during the lesson. Some riders are not ready to be turned loose in the arena but that is our ultimate goal.

If your personal schedule does not allow a structured volunteer schedule then you are welcome to volunteer to assist with barn chores whenever you are available. The horses need fed and groomed and their stalls need mucked.

You're not sure if horses are your thing but have a soft spot for children with disabilities; we can use your talents with keeping the paperwork in order.

What ever your skill is, we can use it. We are always looking for someone who can do different things.

Mission Statement

Chakota has been providing equine-assisted therapy to children with disabilities for 10 years. We are now expanding our service to include veterans who are suffering PTSD or traumatic injuries. Our children and young adult riders enjoy volunteers of all ages and careers. Our veterans are better served by volunteers who are their peers - EMS, police, firefighters, active and retired veterans.

Description

With safety a priority, Chakota-TRC's riding instructors, specially trained horses and caring volunteers, we offer therapeutic riding and horsemanship skills to individuals with a variety of disabilities. These activities give a sense of freedom and independence while enabling the participant to experience accomplishments, interact socially and learn new skills in a pleasurable environment.

What is Therapeutic Horsemanship?

Caring for horses, riding, driving, grooming and other activities are good for everyone. For individuals with disabilities, equine therapy has physical, cognitive, psychological and emotional benefits. Horses minister to the mind, body and spirit in many ways.

Equine Assisted Therapy

Horses are special in that a horse's gait (or movement when it walks) most closely imitates the human walk. The repetitive motion of a horse at a walk stimulates the rider's spine and brain to help improve balance and coordination. Heat from a horse's back helps relax muscles prone to spasms.
