Laura Rivera (UCR) assisting students

Promise Scholars, is an early universal college awareness program for all students in the Ontario- Montclair school district, we are looking for volunteers to offer one-on-one FAFSA assistance to 12th graders at our Cash for College Workshops.

Promise Scholars Cash 4 College Workshops,

February 21 (6:00pm to 8:00pm)

Applying for financial aid can be very intimidating. The goal of the Financial Aid Workshops is to guide high school seniors and their families through the process of completing their FAFSA or Dream Act Application for financial aid. The workshops will take place in computer labs, libraries, and classrooms. Each family will have access to one computer to complete their application. Volunteers will be needed to work with at least five families to assist them step by step through the process. Volunteers will have support from financial aid advisors.

Come help students secure financial aid early and accurately.

Volunteers will:

  • Be trained on different financial aid and how to facilitate filling out the applications
  • Assist at least five families during one session step by step through the application process
  • Assist in setting up computers for the application process
  • Bring themselves and their trained brain
  • Use any Spanish skills possessed (Bilingual volunteers needed)
  • Answer general financial aid questions if volunteer is a Financial Aid Expert (Background in Finances)

Only a few hours of your day can help Fund A Future in the Ontario-Montclair region!

At our training volunteers will learn more about Promise Scholars, a brief history and overview of volunteer opportunities. The remainder of the training will focus on reading through the FAFSA and Dream Act Applications and preparing the volunteers to answer frequently asked questions that come up at the workshops.

Mission Statement

Promise Scholars believes that unlocking the potential of our community relies on unlocking the potential of all our children. So we bring everyone together--students, parents, educators, businesses, and local leaders--to introduce kids to the opportunities available after high school and make sure they get on the education pathway to achieve their goals. When we help them become successful and contributing adults, our entire region benefits from a brighter, more productive future. The vision of the Promise Scholars Initiative is to prepare all Ontario-Montclair School District (OMSD) students who go on to Chaffey, Montclair, and Ontario High Schools to reach their college and career dreams.

Description

Our early and all approach-we connect with all our kids starting in Kindergarten and continue that relationship even after high school-requires a lot of resources and partners. Every kid has the potential to succeed, and helping kids reach their goals is key in strengthening our community and a wide circle of caring and engaged adults helps make this possible.

We work to increase student knowledge about college and career technical training opportunities and help them develop and act on their plans for a post-secondary education.

This is achieved through in-class curriculum on college and careers starting in Kindergarten. Promise Scholars also takes all 5 th and 8 th graders on field trips to community colleges and four year universities so they can begin to envision themselves as college students. All 6 th graders participate in business leader presentations in class, where community members come speak about their path to a degree or certificate and their career. In 9 th grade we help student explore their personality strengths and career options. And 12 th graders get help with their college application and financial aid applications.

We serve low income neighborhoods in Ontario and Montclair where the majority of students will be the first in their family to complete college.
