In NYC, where Samaritans answered over 82,000 hotline calls last year, we respond to people of all ages, sexes, races and cultures, including teenagers, the elderly, people dealing with chronic and terminal illnesses like cancer or AIDS; victims of violence, bullying and sexual abuse; the homeless, unemployed, veterans; those with sexual identity issues, who are trying to cope with stigma, who are hesitant to seek help. Almost anyone who suddenly finds themselves facing some overwhelming obstacle or personal tragedy needs help getting through their moment of crisis.

The work is challenging, the training intensive and the experience extremely rewarding! And though you cannot solve everyone's problems, it's satisfying to know that when someone reaches out for help--You’re There!

Requirements: We are currently seeking volunteers who can donate one weekday morning, afternoon, evening or weekend shift a week and one overnight a month. You'll be joining a group of dedicated volunteers from NYC’s diverse communities who work together in a supportive environment in a convenient Village location. Must be at least 21, have good English speaking and written skills and be able make a 6-month commitment after training. No experience necessary!
