Become a Big Brother, Big Sister or Big Couple!

How Many Bigs Does it Take to Make a Difference?

No matter how you slice it, it really only takes one. Mentoring isn't rocket science or about fancy ideas or grand gestures. It's just about being there and having fun doing everyday things with a person who happens to look up to you. We want you to join a community of awesome people willing to do something really big for someone little just by being yourself.

Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable things you’ll ever do. Not to mention, one of the most fulfilling. You have the opportunity to help shape a child’s future for the better by empowering them to achieve. And the best part is, it’s actually a lot of fun. You and your Little can share the kinds of activities you already like to do.

Play sports together. Go on a hike. Read books. Eat a pizza with extra anchovies. Or just give some advice and inspiration. Whatever it is you enjoy, odds are you’ll enjoy them even more with your Little--and you’ll be making a life-changing impact.

Volunteering just a few hours a month with a child can start something amazing. So why not apply to be a Big today. There are kids out there ready to get started. Are you?

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Description

Changing perspectives. Changing lives.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands is a community-based mentoring program. We match children in the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro and surrounding areas of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa with caring adult mentors.

Big Brothers Big Sisters operates under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers ("Bigs") and children ("Littles"), ages 7 through 18, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people

Our Programs Start Something

National research has shown that positive relationships between Littles and their Bigs have a direct and measurable impact on children’s lives. By participating in our programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:

  • more confident in their schoolwork performance
  • able to get along better with their families
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school.
