Ascentria Care Alliance is a non-profit organization that provides legal and social services to refugees, asylum seekers, and victims of torture in throughout Massachusetts. The legal unit is currently seeking an intern to assist in day to day operation of the legal program at ouroffice in Westfield MA. The intern will have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of legal program, attend client meetings, and attend community presentations, whenever possible. The internship is unpaid.

The legal intern’s duties will include:

• Assisting legal unit in daily office/administrative functions
• Assisting walk- in clients, manage wait list, and direct clients to legal staff as necessary
• Assisting clients to complete applications/petitions
• Helping with interpretation and translation based on language proficiency
• Helping with legal research under supervision of attorneys
• Assisting staff with trainings, meetings, fingerprinting, and special projects
• Manning front desk and providing coverage when staff are at client meetings

Candidates should have the following qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or a graduate program,
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Excellent office organization and research skills;
• Foreign language proficiency preferred (especially Spanish); and Arabic, French, Portuguese, Nepali, and Swahili.
• Demonstrated interest in human rights and immigration issues
