Love History? Love meeting and talking to people?

We are seeking friendly people to be tour guides for our museum’s visitors from around the world. Tour Guides accompany our visitors as they visit life in the 1850"s along the Erie Canal and the industrial complex where canal boats were built and repaired.

Tour Guides may also serve as greeters

Training will be provided.

This season our museum will be open 10 AM to 4 PM daily.

You can schedule your volunteer times and days around your schedule.

Mission Statement

The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, through the preservation, reproduction, construction and interpretation of the Chittenango Landing industrial complex will provide the opportunity to learn of the construction and repair of canal boats and the social history of the Erie Canal era.

Description

The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum is the site of the only dry docks still in existence along the old Erie Canal in Central New York.

Visitors can view and learn about life and work along the Old Erie Canal in the 1800's in our new visitor / education center and library.

Visit the Canal Store where canal boat families bought their supplies. See displays of how life was along the Erie Canal in the 1800's

Visit the Saw mill, mule barn and mechanical shop.

Watch the blacksmith heat iron in his forge and pound it into the tools and parts needed for building and repairing the canal boats.

Examine an 80% size scale canal boat in cutaway view to learn how the boats on the Erie Canal were constructed and how families lived and worked on their boats.

View artifacts from our archaeological digs.

Conduct your own archeological search and see what you can dig up from the past. (You must leave what you find for our researchers)

Pretend you are a young teen boy or girl hired to be a canal boat driver, Hoggee, and walk for miles along the tow path. It’s only 360+ miles more to go!

Space is available for rent in our new visitor / education center for your next meeting or party.
