About

Purpose: To manage Estate Planning and the Legacy Circle program as an integral part of overall shelter fundraising efforts. The Legacy Circle is an honorary program consisting of individuals who have indicated a desire to bequeath monies to C.A.R.E. as a part of their overall estate plans.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain promotional materials to publicize the program and provide recognition to those individuals who have left monies to C.A.R.E. in their estate plans

  • Proactively engage with individuals, legal representatives, organizations and other entities to actively promote the program and to follow-up with current and potential donors to encourage their continued or future participation

  • Participate with other volunteers in an effort to publicize the program during outreach or other special events

  • Maintain an "open" file for those individuals who have indicated a desire to become a Legacy Circle member and maintain a "closed" file for those deceased members from whom funds from their estates were subsequently received by C.A.R.E.

  • Maintain a follow-up file for current contact information on potential members and periodically check with these potential members until they decide on participation

  • Honor those deceased Legacy Circle members by placing an engraved plate on the Legacy Circle plaque located in the reception area at C.A.R.E.

Qualifications:

  • Good communication and listening skills

  • Ability and desire to actively promote the program and work with (usually) mature adults and/or their legal representatives, following up with possible/pending members to maintain their interest in becoming a member, and communicating with family/friends of deceased members to insure they are aware of the Legacy Circle plaque honoring their family member or friend

  • Ability to independently maintain administrative files in a current and organized fashion

    Procedures:

  • Periodically review "Just-In-Case" pamphlet, updating/revising/printing as appropriate and maintain awareness of changes in IRS policies concerning tax consequences of estate gifts

  • Attend outreach or special events (as necessary) and periodically write articles for Critter Chronicles to publicize Legacy Circle

  • Distribute pamphlet to possible members or their representatives and then periodically follow-up to encourage their participation and maintain their interest

  • Upon interest by potential member, create "open file" with information on the potential donor and add their name to Legacy Circle along with those others who have expressed a desire to name C.A.R.E. as a recipient of monies in their estate planning documents

  • Upon notification of the distribution to C.A.R.E. of a portion of a member’s estate, have a plate engraved and mounted on the Legacy Circle plaque in the C.A.R.E. reception area. Then annotate the individual’s file as "closed" and file appropriately in the administrative files
