Mission Statement
The mission of the Tabor Children’s Services Mentoring Program is to empower youth ages 16-21 who are preparing to leave the child welfare system through the means of a mentoring relationship. Through a partnership with BCC&Y, a mentoring program has been incorporated as part of the continuum of care of Tabor’s Adolescent Initiative Program (AIP). The AIP supports a mentoring specialist who facilitates a program that helps adult volunteers form healthy and lasting relationships with youth in order to provide them with confidence, stability, and life skills.
Description
Overview: Tabor Children’s Services (Tabor) and Bucks and Lehigh County Children & Youth (BCC&Y) have partnered to create a mentoring program for youth as they prepare to leave the child welfare system.
Situation:
Youth do receive support from their C&Y caseworkers as well as the staff of Tabor and other Diversionary services. However, they are short term supports. Therefore, youth would greatly benefit from a stable mentoring relationship that is without expiration.
Needs:
The needs of the youth vary with each individual. Some need academic guidance while others need career support. All could simply use a friend who is not paid to be there. A mentor could offer insight, consistent support, and introduce them to new ideas.
Vision:
Tabor and BCC&Y firmly believe that, at the very least, all youth deserve one person who wants to be a part of their lives, one person who believes in them unconditionally. Tabor and BCC&Y are delighted to offer support to these youth through helping to facilitate mentoring relationships.
