Become part of a vibrant learning community and help local adults get the education they need to pursue college or a living wage job.

Every year in Holyoke Spanish speaking adults return to school to complete their high school education. These adults study the math, reading, writing, technology and other skills they need to earn a high school equivalency credential (formerly known as GED) to fulfill personal goals, advance their careers or attend college.

High school level math classes can be particularly stressful for our students. They could use your support! We are in need of tutors who are fluent Spanish speakers to assist. (Sorry, fellow Spanish-learners, this is not the place to learn/practice. Effective volunteers are comfortable explaining academic content in Spanish.)

Volunteer classroom assistants work in a class providing individual and small group support to these adult learners. Volunteers meet weekly with the same class become a valued part of the class, giving students more support, and allowing them to progress faster.

Volunteers may work one-on-one with a learner who is struggling, allow the teacher to divide the class in small groups, or work with the whole class to provide practical and moral support.

Great math tutors ...
... don't have to be "math people" or have loved math in school
... are comfortable with high school math
... understand when students struggle
... are patient, supportive
... ask questions to help students think for themselves

Classes are offered Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9am-10:30am. This class meets virtually via Zoom and will do so for the foreseeable future.

No formal teaching/tutoring experience is needed - just Spanish fluency, good communication skills, a desire to help, and willingness to learn!

Training is provided. All volunteers complete a free training workshop series.
