Become part of a vibrant learning community and help a local adult get the education they need to pursue college or a living wage job.
Volunteers join a class for adults seeking get their High School Equivalency (HiSET, formerly GED). They assist in the classroom by working one-to-one, in small groups, or float among the class helping students (typically 12 or fewer) as needed. We have a few classes conducted in Spanish, and need tutors who are fluent Spanish speakers to assist. (Sorry, fellow Spanish-learners, this is not the place to learn/practice. Effective volunteers are comfortable explaining academic content in Spanish)
Volunteers provide valuable individual attention, and a second source of help and support to students, and allow a teacher to more effectively meet the needs of a diverse class.
Classes meet weekday mornings or afternoons in Holyoke.
No experience as a teacher/tutor required - just a willingness to learn, and the ability to relate and communicate well with people. We will provide training to help you succeed.

At Holyoke Tutor/Mentor we are creating a community where everyone can learn, teach and contribute. To do this we bring together adult learners pursuing their dreams, teachers building supportive classrooms and volunteers sharing their time.
The Holyoke Tutor/Mentor Program was established in 1991 to supplement existing adult education programs in Holyoke, Mass. We recruit, train and support a pool of tutors who work with learners already studying English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education and Adult Secondary Education.
We'll work with your schedule.
