Pet Therapy- Hospice Volunteer

Volunteer in your community and set your own schedule! JourneyCare is looking for volunteers with certified pet therapy dogs who can visit periodically with hospice patients.
JourneyCare supports residents throughout a 10 county area in northern Illinois; our patients live in their own homes (private residences and/or senior living communities) or they may be temporarily receiving care at one of our five Hospice CareCenters (Arlington Heights, Barrington, Chicago, Glenview and Woodstock).
We occasionally receive a request from a patient's nurse or social worker seeking a volunteer who can make a friendly visit with their therapy dog. JourneyCare's volunteer team includes a number of therapy dogs (certified through Therapy Dogs International) but we're seeing more requests than ever. And it's our goal to make every moment count and often a simple thing like a visit from a four-legged friend can make someone's day so much better!
The volunteer-pet team is often called "Care Companions," and they're simply friends who visit (on a routine or occasional basis) with someone receiving hospice care. They provide companionship, emotional support, and, above all, offer a presence, an ear to listen to stories and an understanding smile. Each volunteer does not provide hands on medical care--they're simply a friend because often our patients feel lonely and isolated!
Again, JourneyCare's service area includes 10 counties. Please join us at one of our monthly volunteer orientations to learn more; we offer these sessions 2-3 times a month throughout northern Illinois.
Each orientation covers the following: Hospice 101, Overview of JourneyCare, Our Services & How You Can Help, Boundaries & Confidentiality, Communication, and Documentation. You will also have an opportunity to hear from and ask questions of a panel of current JourneyCare Volunteers. And after the training we also require some online courses, which will help you to feel more prepared for this role.
Please fill out our volunteer application and register for this training here: http://journeycare.org/volunteer/apply-volunteer/

Enriching lives through expert and compassionate care. JourneyCare's Vision: Transforming lives by building a community where exceptional palliative, supportive and end - of- life care is accepted, expected and available to all.
Transforming lives by building a community where exceptional palliative, supportive and end-of-life care is accepted, expected and available to all.
We provide pain and symptom management and end-of-life expertise to residents of a 13-county service area in northern Illinois. Offering both in-home care and five Hospice CareCenters, we are known for our broad continuum of care and innovative programming.
Beyond traditional services and a comprehensive bereavement program, we have the largest pediatric hospice and palliative care program in Illinois and we embrace non-traditional therapies as well as open access for patients receiving aggressive treatment.
Our mission is achieved by a team of board-certified physicians and highly-skilled nurses, therapists, counselors, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers.
JourneyCare has never turned anyone away due to inability to pay because our promise is to meet the patient where they are, build trust, and share the journey, regardless of reimbursement rates. We seek to put the patient in control of their care--because it's the patient's experience and the family's memory.
We are here to help when patients and families need it most. We begin by listening and answering the questions of those who come to us. We know that each experience is personal--and so is our care. We offer the physical, emotional, and spiritual support that's needed to welcome each new day.
We'll work with your schedule.
