In your communityThroughout 10-county area in northern ILBarrington, IL 60010

Volunteer in your community and set your own schedule! JourneyCare is looking for volunteers who are licensed cosmetologists who can periodically meet the special needs and requests of our hospice patients.

JourneyCare supports residents throughout a 10 county area in northern Illinois; our patients live in their own own homes (private residences and/or senior living communities) or they may be temporarily receiving care at one of our two hospice centers (Barrington, Woodstock).

We occasionally receive a request from a patient's nurse or social worker seeking a volunteer who can provide a hair cut or give a patient a manicure or pedicure. JourneyCare's volunteer team has very few licensed cosmetologists and often these requests go unfilled. But it's our goal to make every moment count and often a simple thing like a haircut or beauty treatment can make someone's day so much better! To provide each patient with comfort and dignity is our goal.

Beyond this specific need, we have a lot of other volunteer roles that might be of interest. For instance, a "Care Companion" is simply a friend who visits (on a routine or occasional basis) with someone receiving hospice care. They provide companionship, emotional support, and, above all, offer a presence, an ear to listen to stories and an understanding smile. You do not provide hands on medical care--you're simply a friend because often our patients feel lonely and isolated!

Care Companions also provide respite support so tired, stressed caregivers can take a much-needed break. JourneyCare supports pediatric patients as well and also needs volunteers who can support those families, perhaps by spending time with the patient's siblings.

Again, JourneyCare's service area includes 10 counties. Please join us at one of our monthly volunteer orientations to learn more:

  • On March 14, June 13, September 19, and December 12 this training will take place in Barrington
  • On April 18, July 18, and October 17 this training will take place in Woodstock
  • On May 16, August 15, and November 14 this training will take place in Lombard

Each orientation covers the following: Hospice 101, Overview of JourneyCare, Our Services & How You Can Help, Customer Service, Patients' Rights/HIPAA, and Infection Control. You will also have an opportunity to hear from and ask questions of a panel of current JourneyCare Volunteers. And after the training we also require some online courses, which will help you to feel more prepared for this role.

Please fill out our volunteer application and register for this training here: http://journeycare.org/volunteer/apply-volunteer/
