The 2018 hurricane season has been extraordinarily active in parts of the U.S., with Hurricane Florence currently impacting millions in the Carolinas. As this natural disaster unfolds, the staff here at VolunteerMatch is doing its part to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you are prepared and safe. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know about the most effective ways to contribute.
Do you like meeting people from around the world? Value the diversity in your own community? Consider becoming a Small Group Tutor at the Chandler Public Library. There are adults in our community waiting to be paired with a library volunteer tutor to assist them with their English skills. All training is provided. Volunteers meet with their small group tutoring participants twice a week, for two hours each time. This is an on-going volunteer opportunity and we do ask for a minimum of a 6-month commitment. Volunteers must first attend a volunteer orientation, provide references and attend specific tutor training. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Volunteers will be trained on the materials used in the tutoring sessions, as well as given information on how to work with adult learners. No prior teaching experience is needed. Tutoring sessions can be scheduled at any of the four Chandler Library locations. Good interpersonal skills are needed, as well as a desire to work with others. Having good English skills and a comfort level working of with 4-5 adults in an instructional setting will be needed.
