Volunteer Position: Business Advisor

Do you want to help underrpresented young entrepreneurs make their business idea a reality?

To become a business mentor or advisor, go to skysthelimit.org and click "Signup as an Advisor or Mentor"!

Your work will directly impact the lives of under-served young adults (ages 18 to 29), helping them create new economic opportunities. The impact of micro business ownership is huge - you will enable young people to create a new source of income, develop marketable skills and enhance their sense of empowerment and dignity.

skysthelimit.org is a 501(3)c non-profit that helps underrepresented young adults 18-29 connect with advisors and mentors who can help them through their entrepreneurial journey.

We use our digital platform at skysthelimit.org to get to know our volunteer business advisors & mentors and make high quality matches with underserved young entrepreneurs.

On skysthelimit.org, we're looking for business mentors, advisors and subject matter experts (i.e. web consultants/developers, lawyers, accountants, etc.) who want to work with underserved, young entrepreneurs. Effective mentors are great communicators with excellent listening and coaching skills who can strengthen our young peoples' business acumen.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with and coaching our young entrepreneurs through their business journey,
  • Building their confidence and developing their capacity to launch and sustain their enterprise to maximize their chances of success,
  • Drawing support from colleagues and others in the mentor's community to provide the entrepreneur needed information, support, and access to resources where needed

Details:

Mentors and advisors usually work with one young entrepreneur at a time, supporting them in a combination of in-person and virtual forums depending upon what is needed.

Mentoring and advising sessions usually last ~1hr and take place remotely or in-person (if possible) a few times a month.

Mentors/advisors and young entrepreneurs can end their matches at any time.

Requirements:
  • Ability to quickly create a trusting relationship founded on the right intentions, recognizing the respect you show to your young entrepreneur and the confidence our young people place in you.

  • A strong belief in and demonstrated alignment with skysthelimit.org's social mission, and an interest in small business development.

  • Patience and empathy to "get in the shoes" of our young entrepreneurs, identifying and providing the support that they need when they need it.

  • Ability to appropriately break down business strategy and effectively communicate with young entrepreneurs, while understanding your role as a mentor, not an owner.

  • Mindset: Personable, high-energy, innovative, creative, outside-the-box, analytical, emotionally intelligent, supportive.

Please contact Danee at program@skysthelimit.org for more information! We would love to hear from you.

Mission Statement

Skysthelimit.org's mission is to help underserved young adult entrepreneurs build their businesses. We connect our entrepreneurs with experienced volunteer business advisors & mentors to help them build their businesses. Join us at skysthelimit.org!

Description

Our skysthelimit.org platform connects our entrepreneurs with experienced volunteer business advisors & mentors to help them build their businesses.

Over 11 million low-income young adults across the country say they want to start a business, but lack the support and resources they need to do so. Ourmission is to prepare, launch and grow highly motivated young entrepreneurs who face barriers to business ownership. We do this through our "Pathway to Business Ownership" training, interest-free loans up to $10,000, and a network of experienced, volunteer business mentors and subject-matter experts.

We know that talent is distributed equally - but opportunity isn't. Our support levels the playing field for entrepreneurs ages 18 to 29, helping them create local businesses, jobs and new sources of income for themselves and their families while learning highly relevant business skills.

Our vision is that these young adult-led enterprises become a national model for job creation, equitable development and economic empowerment.

We're also known as Youth Business USA. We're a 501(c)3 public charity, EIN# 27-4333255.
