Volunteer Position: Business Advisor
Do you want to help low-income young entrepreneurs make their business idea a reality?
Your work will directly impact the lives of under-served young adults (ages 18 to 29), helping them create new economic opportunities. The impact of micro business ownership is huge - you will enable young people to create a new source of income, develop marketable skills and enhance their sense of empowerment and dignity.
Our ideal candidate is someone with the ability to build trust and rapport with underrepresented young adult entrepreneurs, and is an experienced business professional with significant entrepreneurial experience.
This role includes:
Collaborating with and coaching YBUSA’s young entrepreneurs as they create their initial business plan, supporting them one-on-one through written and oral feedback as they create their business model using the YBUSA Pathway to Business Methdology.
Supporting them through the planning, launch, and growth phases on specific activities which draw on your subject matter expertise.
Helping to build their confidence and develop their capacity to launch and sustain their enterprise. Young entrepreneurs who you help prepare will have access to our interest-free business loans up to $10,000 and are also assigned a mentor to work with them for a minimum of one year. Your work with them as an advisor can lead to a mentorship role if you and the entrepreneur so choose.
Our business advisors may work with up to five young entrepreneurs at a time, one-one-one, to support their needs on specific areas requiring subject matter expertise. Advisory activities range from providing written feedback to one on one sessions.
Where appropriate, advisors can meet with young entrepreneurs either in-person or virtually (phone or video chat).j
Our Business Advisors draw on their own expertise as well as tools from the YBUSA Pathway to Business Ownership toolkit. This toolkit structures the process of building a microbusiness, providing business planning & modeling tools, on as needed basis. These tools cover: branding, marketing, product/service design, sales, legal & regulatory, accounting & bookkeeping, operations, etc.

Context: Many of our young entrepreneurs are working on self-employment business ideas, primarily in the food, clothing, and general services industries. Our young entrepreneurs often have part-time (or full-time) employment to juggle, and come to us in all stages of business development. Our entrepreneurs primarily hear about us through: referrals from current entrepreneurs, our partnerships with other community-based organizations and the Peralta Community College District, and through online searches for help building their business.
