Mission Statement

The English Language Learners provide instruction at no cost to adult individuals who wish to learn or improve their English language skills regardless of sex, age, race, religion or national origin. ESL In-Home Program empowers people to become more productive members of their local communities by providing them with the language and cultural skills necessary for life in America.

Description

We focus on the needs of non-English speaking adults who are eager to learn or improve their English language skills. We are a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization tutoring adults at no cost.

With English acquisition, adults have a greater opportunity to find gainful employment, advance in current jobs, become independent of social service, enter higher education institutions, reduce their social isolation and cultural separation, become contributing members of their community, likely to be more engaged in their children's educational life as their English proficiency continues to grow with the positive social and emotional health of their children as a consequence. The role model their parents and grandparents are providing in bettering themselves educationally will likely positively impact their children to also achieve educational goals.

The program's success is exemplified by the following:--Over 5,000 adults have been helped - over 290 are now U.S. citizens--88 more are now studying for the exam--Some are studying for a GED--Many have found jobs--Some have advanced in their employment--Parents are communicating with teachers and medical personnel without interpreters--Parents and grandparents help their children with homework-- Students now shop in English-speaking establishments--Some attend higher education.
