Nickelsville is a local homeless encampment (tent city) in the International District. The camp is self-managed, but regularly works with the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI). We're reaching out to our volunteers for their assistance with Nickelsville.
The camp wants to do more community outreach and service in their neighborhood. They need some help in making local community partnerships and finding local opportunities to perform community service. This volunteer would also need to help them track and report their community service hours.
The work can be done in a variety of settings. For instance, a volunteer may need to physically visit local organizations, visit the camp to get to know residents and assign service and by working at home, LIHI offices or SHARE offices (operator of Nickelsville) to do the related office work. We can work with you to find the best locations to do the needed tasks.
To apply, please fill out a volunteer application at: https://lihi.org/get-involved/volunteer-application/

About Low Income Housing Institute
Location:
2407 First Ave,, Seattle, WA 98121, US
Mission Statement
The Low Income Housing Institute develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington state; advocates for just housing policies at the local and national levels; and administers a range of supportive service programs to assist those we serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency.
Description
LIHI develops and provides affordable housing to 4,000+ low income, homeless and formerly homeless people, including families. In 2019, an estimated 11,199 people experienced homelessness in King County alone. Many of LIHI housing projects focus on transitioning families and individuals out of homelessness, including chronically homeless populations. Most of the units developed by LIHI are occupied by formerly homeless households.
LIHI assists our residents with services that help them maintain stable housing and prevent them from becoming homeless again (e.g. through improving resident income and/or education status, dealing with long standing mental and physical health conditions) and increase self-sufficiency.
We also help homeless individuals and families remain healthy & employed: LIHI operates the Urban Rest Stop - an innovative hygiene center for the homeless located in downtown Seattle; a safe, clean and dignified place where as many as 500 homeless individuals, families, elders and youth access restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities each day. This center is open seven days a week, with extended hours specifically designed to assist homeless persons who are working or seeking employment. 60% of URS patrons have steady employment, but can't earn enough income to afford the rent.
