Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children, a volunteer-powered network of committed people--from all walks of life--who believe society has a fundamental obligation to children who have been abused and neglected. CASA volunteers are appointed to advocate for the best interest of a child involved in the legal system. We are everyday citizens who get to know the child, are given access to investigate all aspects of the case, and then speak up for the child in court. CASA volunteers are assigned one case at a time, allowing for concentrated attention and advocacy. We are people just like you who believe that every child has the right to be treated with dignity, to be safe, and to thrive in the embrace of a loving family. Mission Statement
The purpose of Kenai Peninsula CASA is to recruit, train, and oversee volunteers to serve as advocates for abused and neglected children in both state and tribal court. A CASA volunteer is appointed by a judge to speak to the best interest of the child in court.
Description
Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children, to make sure they do noy get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system or languish in inappropriate group or foster homes. Volunteers stay with each case until it is closed and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many abused children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence in their lives.
Independent research has demonstrated that children with a CASA volunteer are substantially less likely to spend time in long-term foster care and less likely to reenter care.
Kenai Peninsula CASA is a partnership between Kenaitze Indian Tribe CASA & Office of Public Advocacy. This is the only CASA program in Alaska that dual trains CASA volunteers to serve in both tribal and state courts. Through our partnership we are able to serve more children on the Kenai Peninsula.
