FRIDAY NIGHT: The centerpiece of this ministry, which has recently completed nine years of service to the under served, is our Friday night outreach at Liberty Plaza Park in downtown Ann Arbor, corner of Division and Liberty. We arrive at the park just before 7pm - no matter the date, weather, or holiday - and we stay until 8pm.
During that time we give out hot pizza, hot and cold beverages, packed bags of groceries and donations of jackets, hats, glove, scarves, blankets, sweaters, etc., especially during the cold weather. We never miss a Fridayno matter what so you can show up any Friday night and ask for the co-leader who will assign jobs. If you know ahead of time, send us an email and we can tell you who is on duty that evening. (We discourage people from bringing children under the age of 12 to the park).
For those of you who belong to a group, we prefer you bring only 4 to 5 members on a Friday night and not all 10 to 15 members of your organization. We have found from experience that if large groups come out, there is not that much to do and volunteers often leave the park feeling unfulfilled. It is much more helpful to us, and to our under-served population, if you bring smaller groups on successive Fridays. Having a huge group on one Friday and no one on the other Fridays is not the best use of our volunteer base.
Or, if you wish, you can come to Vineyard Church, 2275 Platt Road, Ann Arbor, 48104 at about 6:15pm any Friday night and help load the truck, make coffee, pick up the pizza and then once at the park, unload the truck, set up the serving stations, serve, fellowship. Just before 8pm, we close up the stations, load the truck, go back to the church and unload. For your information, during the cold winter months we have far fewer homeless show up at the park, maybe 30 to 40 people. That's because many have signed up to participate in the Rotating Shelter program in this area. During the warmer months we can serve upwards of 120 people at the park.
EVERY OTHER THURSDAY NIGHT: We meet at Vineyard Church and pack the grocery bags for giving out on Friday night and we sort clothing, stock the pantry, etc. This usually takes from 6 to 7pm, depending upon how many volunteers show up. (Check with us about which Thursdays). We would be glad to welcome you at either, or both, of those volunteer opportunities.
DONATIONS: We also accept donations of food, including cans of tuna, soup, chili, pasta, bottled water (no glass containers), jackets, socks, hats, gloves, blankets, etc. You can drop your donations in the Homeless bin in the Church lobby on Thursdays between 9AM and 5PM, or by appointment. Financial support is most welcome.
