YSI's Summer Science Camp (SSC) Volunteer Program

Brief Description:

Volunteers will take initiative in various ways to help camp be a success. The two main duties of volunteers (depending on the shift selected) will be either strategically helping instructors assemble materials and activities for their camps, and/or helping with end of the day camp take-down.

Our 2017 SSC Summer Program provides volunteers with optional growth opportunities. Here is a sneak peak:

- Volunteer enrichment - Volunteers can choose to learn about natural history, participate on guided nature walks, animal meet & greets, etc. for 30 minutes after their SSC shift.

- Volunteer Lead opportunities - Every week, an individual will be selected to act as a Lead for their team. Leads will work with YSI’s volunteer coordinator to foster leadership skills and strategies.

- **Newest ** Shutterbug program - A team of volunteers work together to capture the camp experience with YSI’s camera in fun and creative ways.

Details:

  1. The Youth Science Institute's Science Summer Camp ( SSC) volunteers are responsible for helping with camp preparation. SSC Volunteers do not work directly with children in camps.
  2. Camps run weekly from June to the first week of August.
  3. Volunteers must commit to work three (3) camp weeks (do not have to be consecutive) - shifts are two hours/day.
  4. Volunteers must submit required paperwork, participate in an interview, and attend an orientation in May (3 dates to choose from)

** Who would excel in this service opportunity: **

  • Those looking to improve leadership skills. - Volunteers have the option of applying to be a "Volunteer Lead," where they work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to identify and improve leadership skills.
  • Those who want to channel their creativity and critical thinking skills. - Volunteers are given tasks, and the autonomy to complete them in various ways. Those who enjoy thinking "outside the box" are encouraged to apply!
  • Those thinking of becoming a teacher. - This is a great way to gain experience in learning what happens "behind the scenes" of a class and camp.
  • Those who enjoy completing tasks. - If you like making lists and checking off the tasks you finish - this is definitely or you! There is nothing more gratifying than knowing your hard work is completed and appreciated.

We hope to see you this summer!

Mission Statement

YSI Parters with Nature to Teach Kids Science!

Our Mission: To inspire enthusiasm for Science and a love of learning.

Description

The Youth Science Institute (YSI) is a leader in nature-based science education in Silicon Valley, CA, engaging 30,000 pre-school through high school students annually in the wonders of science.

What we do:

In our 62 years, more than 1.5 million children have benefited from our mission: to inspire enthusiasm for science and a love of learning.

YSI focuses on hands-on learning of life sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences.

This includes:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Geology
  • Natural history
  • Much more!

YSI programs and curricula meet and support California State Science Standards.

What makes us special:

Our enthusiastic, Bay Area science instructors have a passion to increase curiosity for science education through all of the programs that we offer.

Our highly experiential, group programs develop the critical thinking skills that are necessary for a child's academic success, which ultimately impacts his or her opportunity for economic success.

Why it is important:

Our School Programs and Summer Science Camps also directly connect children with the wonders of nature, addressing the increasing challenge of "nature deficit disorder." By fostering a connection with nature and developing their critical thinking abilities, students have a greater potential to grow into involved citizens with the capacity to contribute to the community and the health of the planet.

In order to develop a work-force that can contribute to the vitality of the Bay Area and nation, science education is critical to meeting that need. YSI programs fill the gap in science learning that is present in classrooms today.

Our Nature Centers:

YSI's three Science and Nature Centers are located at Alum Rock Park in East San Jose, Sanborn Park in Saratoga, and Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos.

Our Alum Rock and Vasona Lake centers are open to the public and feature live birds, insects, amphibians and reptiles, interactive exhibits, and year-round programs for children and families.

_______________________

YSI also holds two annual educational events: a FREE Community Day each year and a Wildlife Festival the first Sunday in October, as well as Science Safaris (public classes) throughout the year.
