Nature Abounds, a national 501c3 non-profit organization, is looking for senior aged volunteers (55 yrs of age) to serve as DeckHands onboard the Steamboat Floating Classroom (SPLASH). Summary: DeckHand serves along with captain and engineer in safe orderly operation of the vessel. Depending on interests and skills of crew member, promotion to Mate (Senior DeckHand) is possible. Availability: Mid-April through Mid-October each year. Busy season is May-July. Weekday and weekend hours. Responsibilities: Greet passenger group in parking lot; preparations to get underway; fitting children with Life Jackets (PFDs); loading and distribution of passengers; line handling; anchoring; class rotation; monitoring passenger well-being and participation; reporting depth soundings to captain (if required); docking preparation and procedures; disembarking passengers; "putting boat to bed". Demonstrates situational awareness. Recognizes and reports abnormal situations.
