We need your help to feed all of the families in our care! AFAC currently distributes over 80,000 pounds of food to over 2,200 families each week and our service numbers continue to grow. Food drives are a great way to help AFAC. 40 % of the food AFAC distributes is donated to us. The food we’ll get from your food drive helps keep our costs down and provides us with the kinds of food we need. Food donations are tax deductible; donated food is valued at $1.70 per pound. Your food donations will be weighed and you will receive a receipt at the time of drop-off. Food donations of 100 pounds of food or more will also receive a tax receipt by mail. Here is what AFAC needs help collecting:

  • cooking oil in plastic bottles
  • small bags of all purpose flour
  • canned proteins (tuna, chicken, salmon)
  • low sugar cereals
  • low sodium canned soups
  • low sodium canned beans

If you register your food drive, we can drop off food drive boxes and can arrange for your food to be picked up by us! No time to collect canned goods? We also offer a Virtual Food Drive!

About Arlington Food Assistance Center

Location:

2708 S Nelson St, Arlington, VA 22206, US

Mission Statement

Our only mission is to feed the hungry, but by relieving the food budget of our clients, we help prevent homelessness, and allow our clients to make other necessary purchases without sacrificing their health and nutritional needs.

Description

The Arlington Food Assistance Center is an incorporated 501c (3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing supplemental food items to Arlington residents who cannot afford to purchase sufficient food to meet their basic needs. We provide groceries to families and individuals referred to us by the Arlington County Department of Human Services, other social service agencies, and the churches of Arlington. We are run entirely by a volunteer Board of Directors, a staff of twelve professionals, and more than 600 volunteers from families, businesses, religious organizations, and public and private social service agencies. AFAC fits neatly into the comprehensive system of service delivery that characterizes the work done by the agencies and churches in Arlington. We support the work of other agencies by letting them concentrate on their area of expertise. If area social workers see a need for food with their clients, they can easily make a referral to us. This system ensures that our clients are legitimate and that the entire range of their needs is being assessed and addressed. AFAC obtains surplus food at a minimal cost from the Capital Area Community Food Bank and at no cost from local bakeries, supermarkets, farmers' markets, food drives, and private donors. These groceries are redistributed to clients who have been referred by private or public agencies or by religious organizations. We do not distribute ready-to-eat food, nor do we provide food on a walk-in basis.
