Family Friends will assist newly arrived refugee families living in the Des Moines area acclimate to life in the United States. Through meaningful relationships, Family Friends will promote self-sufficiency and provide refugee families with the tools they need to thrive in their new home and become active participants in the community. This relationship will be mutually beneficial, with Family Friends providing their refugee families with opportunities to help and assist them as well. Family Friends and refugee families will walk side by side, learning and growing together as they develop deep and meaningful relationships.

Family Friends can participate in a variety of activities with their matched refugee family including: learning how to ride the bus, registering for a library card, applying for a driver’s permit, and going to the grocery store. Family Friends and refugee families alike are encouraged to come up with their own activities that are engaging and help build their relationships.

For 100 years, the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) has given hope and new life to persons fleeing from war, violence and persecution in their home country. A catalyst for refugee rights and advocacy, USCRI has changed the lives of thousands of newly arriving Americans and continues to do so through various program support.

USCRI Des Moines supports refugees beginning their new lives in the U.S. by providing immediate needs, core services and community orientations. Through collaborative support between USCRI and local businesses, organizations and individuals, each newly arriving American is given tools and resources to successfully adapt to life in the Greater Des Moines area.

Community involvement is an essential piece of refugee resettlement. You can help refugees transition to a new life in the Greater Des Moines area by volunteering, donating money or goods, or by partnering with USCRI to serve refugees.
