This is an unpaid opportunity, due to the depth of training we ask for at least a 3 month commitment, but longer would be preferred. The candidate will need to be able to work (2) 4-6 hour days Monday - Friday, between the hours of 8-4:30. If the candidate performs the job well, it could transition into a paid 6 month 20 hour per week position.
This position will be very hands on, and a great career building opportunity, a job to transition into a new field, or an excellent way for someone who wants to improve the Community they live in.
The purpose of this position is to assist the Code Enforcement Officer with administering, interpreting, educating, inspecting and enforcing the City’s ordinances, particularly with regard to nuisance and property maintenance issues.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Using dispute resolution and professional communication skills, conducts inspections and re-inspections; prepares compliance letters, notices and reports; responds to inquiries; investigates complaints and advises property owners of code requirements and enforcement procedures. 2. Monitors commercial districts, including big box parking lots for compliance. 3. Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities that are apparent, delegated or assigned.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 1. Knowledge of Code Enforcement and property maintenance Codes and relevant city, state and/or federal laws, rules and regulations. 2. Knowledge of customer service and public relations. 3.Considerable ability to work independently, assume responsibility for determining compliance with codes, prioritize, meet deadlines and make appropriate decisions. 4. Ability to communicate effectively with team members and members of the public. 5. Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality. 6. Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written modes, including preparing and maintaining accurate written reports. 7. Ability to operate a networked personal computer and standard software and to maintain up-to-date, accurate records. 8. Ability to drive, sit, stand, walk and operate a keyboard using fine motor skills to write and utilize computer software. 9. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 1. Experience in explaining, teaching or directing others. 2. Experience with standard office software including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook or equivalent. 3. Possession of a valid Minnesota Driver License and good driving record for the past three years.
