About

Sidewalker for Therapeutic Riding Classes Are you a sidewalker? A sidewalker is a very special person. A sidewalker helps a person who has a cognitive or physical disability enjoy freedom, exercise, social interaction, growth and learning opportunities while benefiting from the warmth, movement and fun of riding a horse. A sidewalker is a safety and support for the rider. The certified instructor teaches the class, but without the sidewalkers, there is no class for the riders. Riders come in all ages and abilities. Classes are small for lots of individual attention. They are held on weekday evenings, and Saturday mornings. Riders depend on their team: their horse, the horse leader, and the sidewalkers. Consistency is important for both the horse and the rider. So sidewalkers sign up to come for a particular time for the season. Classes are every week for six weeks, then a break week. They run from mid-September to mid-June. A Sidewalker loves horses as well as people. A sidewalker is at least sixteen years old, and if over 18 can pass a background check. Sidewalkers can walk beside a horse for 30 minutes, and even jog alongside for a minute or two. A tall sidewalker is very much in demand! A Sidewalker can hold either arm up at shoulder level for ten to fifteen minutes. Are you a reservist or a veteran? Are you bi-lingual in Spanish? Are you experienced working with people who have special needs? Are you a horse lover? Then what are you waiting for? Enjoy the tremendous satisfaction of helping 2-3 hours per week as a therapeutic riding sidewalker!
