Peacock Acres for the first time has extended our volunteering program to our Transitional Age Youth (16-24 years old) programs!

Options include Education, Health/Fitness, and Beauty/Parenting. Each of the opportunities offer unique ways to interact with our older youth in a mentoring setting.

Right now, we have an extra need for the educational support which could include tutoring in English and Math, or CAHSEE support.

If you are interested, please go to:

Description

Peacock Acres provides supportive housing, intense case management, life coaching, and education for youth that have been separated from their families. Our mission is to steer these youth towards opportunities for personal growth as they continue their journey toward a happy, productive life. We envision Monterey County as a community where every youth in foster care is afforded the same opportunities and support as their peers. Peacock Acres currently operates five supportive programs: Therapeutic Group Homes for boys ages 7-17; Incarceration to Success (I2S) for boys ages 16-19; Transitional Housing Placement Program (THPP) for foster teens ages 16-18; the Peacock Acres Transitional Housing program (PATH-Plus/ THP-Plus) for emancipated foster youth ages 18-24; and our newest project, The Learning Center at Peacock Acres which provides mentorship and tutoring services to students in foster care.

Peacock Acres’ original Group Home was founded and operated by Gene and Nancy Edgin. Nancy still plays an active role in providing mentorship and seeking out educational and vocational opportunities for our youth. Nancy’s son, Ernest Howard grew up in the Group Home with the foster youth who came to live with the family and now serves as Peacock Acres’ CEO and Executive Director. Ernest’s experience as a child growing up in a group home has given him expert knowledge of how best to work with youth in foster care and guide them towards safer, more fulfilling and more confident lives. Our Director of Programs, Steve Duran, has worked with Peacock Acres over the last 13 years. Despite his many responsibilities as Director of Programs and as a Peacock Acres House Parent, he is always available to provide one-on-one support to our youth and their case managers. Our lead staff share an innate instinct for working with foster youth in order to help them overcome past trauma so that they may take control of their lives and become confident, successful young adults.

Peacock Acres has provided residential foster care in Monterey County since 1983. We understand the life challenges faced by youth in foster care and over the years, our residential programs have expanded to meet the needs of transitional age youth, former foster youth, and foster youth on probation. Peacock Acres now houses between 40 and 45 clients at any given time in scattered-site housing in the Salinas area. In 2008, Peacock Acres PATH-Plus program received the "Highest Level of Satisfaction of Any Program" in California and in 2009, Peacock Acres received the "Heart for Kids" award from Mbaykids.com. In 2011, Peacock Acres served 83 foster and probationary youth in Monterey County.
