ORGANIZATION: BiblioWorks

Are you committed to bringing sustainable and profound change to the lives of communities in rural Bolivia? Do you have previous experience of leadership and people management, either with volunteers or in a for-profit setting? If so, we would love to hear from you! BiblioWorks is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity which has established twelve libraries in poor communities in and around the beautiful city of Sucre, Bolivia. We believe that healthy communities require healthy minds, and our sustainable libraries act as a vital way for communities to develop through literacy and education. We need a volunteer to work in our Sucre office as our Volunteer Director. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who has previous experience in leadership and people management. You would be responsible for working with the Director to maintain our website, manage our volunteer recruitment strategy, and offer support to the Director with communications in English translation. You would work collaboratively with the Communications Director to support their work in fundraising for the charity. This role requires creativity, enthusiasm and a basic to intermediate level of Spanish as all of our permanent members of staff in the office are Bolivian. Experience of the above skills would be a plus, but are not a necessity. A desire to make a durable impact is the most important requirement of this role, combined with extensive enthusiasm! We would like at least a three month commitment from any volunteers wishing to apply for this role. We look forward to welcoming you to our team here in Bolivia!

Mission Statement

BiblioWorks promotes education and literacy in communities in need. We believe that healthy communities require healthy minds. That's why we have been building libraries, supplying books and training librarians in the poorest communities of Bolivia since 2005. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, our funding comes from donors and volunteers who dedicate their time towards helping communities in rural Bolivia. We are not a religious or political organization.

Description

Founded in 2005 by the hard work of Megan Sherar, a Peace Corps volunteer and her brother, Brendan Sherar, CEO of Biblio.com, BiblioWorks has since continued to grow. From its initial beginnings as one library in the community of Morado K'asa to fifteen libraries today, BiblioWorks are proud of the impact that we have had in rural Bolivia. In rural Bolivia, the concept of public libraries is relatively new, and most children and young people do not have the vital access to books and information that they need to achieve success. We believe that reading and education are to keys to strengthen communities. By training librarians, teachers, and other community members in the proper use of a public library, we ensure that everything that we do here is sustainable and helps the community itself to continue growing.

In addition to the work that we do establishing libraries, we also actively seek volunteers who wish to work in our libraries, or with our team in our office in Sucre. We ask that they offer their skills and passions to the communities: whether by leading reading clubs as Literacy Ambassadors, opening the doors to the world through English lessons as English teachers, or through offering women in the community the chance to improve their literacy, as Women's Literacy Teachers. Each and every one has an enormous impact, and are incredible proud of the work that these generous and enthusiastic volunteers from all walks of life and from many different countries do in the communities here in Bolivia.
