Volunteers work one-on-one with elementary students, 1st - 5th grades, who have fallen behind in reading. Volunteers will be paired with a student reading below grade level, providing one-on-one tutoring. All curriculum and tutoring materials will be provided on-site. No experience is required -- with one-on-one attention, we achieve an 87% success rate. Our structured curriculum has been proven to be very effective, yet it's easy-to-follow. And there is always a staff member to help support and assist you. Opportunities are available Monday - Thursday during the school day and after school. Our tutors range from high school students to retirees.
Skills Needed: The Reading Partners curriculum is very easy-to-follow, and no experience is necessary! Volunteers should be passionate about inspiring young people. We ask all of our volunteers to complete a criminal background check, which we are happy to reimburse.
Required Qualifications: Willingness to learn about tutoring strategies. Patience working with students who need help learning. Ability to work independently or with limited supervision. Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups. Ability to commit to a schedule and show up promptly when expected. Orientation: Tutors will complete the New Tutor Orientation, an online orientation that takes around 20 - 30 minutes to complete. This provides further history on the Reading Partners program, as well as examples of the curriculum. Tutors are then scheduled for a Shadow Session, allowing them to tour the Reading Center, "shadow" an existing student-tutor pair, and ask any questions of the on-site coordinator.
Benefits: You will be able to form a strong connection with a child in your community by one-on-one attention while allowing them to gain confidence and accelerate their reading.
Time Commitment: We ask for a commitment of 45 minutes per week (at your convenience between 9 and 5), for at least 3 months.
