Are you interested in education, history, art, toys, or miniatures? If so, becoming a Pop-Up Programming volunteer at The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures would be a great fit for you!
Home to the world’s largest collection of fine-scale miniatures and one of the largest toy collections on public display in the United States, the museum features daily pop-up programming in its galleries.
Pop-Up Programming takes place on a mobile cart placed in the galleries. The cart features activities themed around a nearby object. Pop-up Programming volunteers facilitate the cart's activities, which include handling objects from the Education Collection, giving short talks about the daily topic, leading simple crafts, and engaging visitors who approach the table.
Current topics include toy sewing machines (visitors sew their own needle book using a 1950s toy Singer sewing machine); miniature wood planing (visitors plane their own tiny block of wood using a miniature plane); and optical toys (visitors engage with different toys that explore motion and vision). Programs in development include three special-interest crafts involving the Wizard of Oz, a program on how dolls are made, a program on miniature room settings, and a program on toy trains.
Pop-Up Programming volunteers attend a fun and informative 9-week training course that begins in March 2017. For over 30 years, volunteers have been a vital part of the museum, and they enjoy benefits such as free admission passes for their family and friends, exciting behind-the-scenes opportunities, activities such as receptions and field trips, and the joy of being part of our friendly community of volunteers. We'd love to have you join our dedicated, welcoming community!
