ORGANIZATION: Volunteers Peru

Students at Colegio Honofre Benavides

We are looking for enthusiastic people with a passion for education to work at our school project in a rural region in southern Peru. As a support teacher you will work alongside a local teacher at our partner school, Colegio Honofre Benavides in the town of Tomepampa, Cotahuasi Canyon. This is a state primary and secondary school with approximately 250 students. Responsibilities include supporting the main teacher, teaching English, supporting individual students, and getting involved in mini projects as appropriate to the needs of the school and the community. Tomepampa is in a beautiful location in the spectacular Cotahuasi canyon. However this is a remote, underprivileged region. We are therefore working alongside the school to develop projects that support teachers will work on with the students to help them expand their options and become more active in their own communities. International teachers can also help to promote inter-cultural awareness and understanding. We ask that those applying for the position of support teacher dedicate a minimum of one month. This is a fantastic opportunity to get teaching experience in a completely different cultural setting and to spend some time in a little-visited yet fascinating area of Peru. Please note that due to school holidays, this position is available from March - December only.

Mission Statement

Education and social support in the community

Description

Volunteers Peru is a small grassroots NGO based in the city of Arequipa in the Andes of southern Peru. We are currently working in partnership with two projects where volunteers can make a positive contribution to the local community. The first is a home for girls at risk in Arequipa; the second is a public school in the village of Tomepampa, Cotahuasi Canyon.

We are committed to helping the children that we work with to fulfil their personal and educational needs and to promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Long and short-term opportunities are available. Both projects are greatly in need of support.
