"Being bilingual increases the grey matter in certain parts of the brain" according to Georgetown University.
We need you and your grey matter to volunteer as a Friendly Visitor. We have many Spanish speaking seniors who are isolated by health problems, poverty and loneliness. Please give 1 hour a week to be a Friendly Visitor to Spanish speaking seniors in Long Beach and the South Bay. These seniors have been on the waiting list for months. Many Spanish speaking seniors cannot attend senior programs, activities or community events because they are not confident in their English skills.
Please use your skills as a Bi-lingual Spanish/English speaker to help someone. It is just 1 hour a week. You will visit the senior in their home for a chat, a game of cards or dominos, a short walk, or a snack. Our seniors were natives of many Spanish speaking countries such as Cuba, Peru, Columbia, and Mexico. They have fascinating stories to tell and want to learn about you.
Our agency is Volunteer Action for Aging, a Community Service division of SCAN Health Plan. We coordinate a Friendly Visitor program to assist isolated, lonely seniors in their home. Our Friendly Visitor program is free of charge.
