Passage Point is a supportive housing program for parents who would otherwise be homeless and are reuniting with their children and families. At Passage Point we empower parents and children to gain the skills and confidence necessary to become self-sufficient.
The after-school tutors work with the staff to facilitate a positive learning environment for school aged children. The goal is to work with students so that they gain confidence and further develop their academic skills in order to maintain their grade level and move on to other educational goals. Providing homework assistance and a safe place to be after school is essential to a successful educational experience.
One on one or small group assistance based around the student's area of needs. Work with student to complete any and all required assignments. Assist students in preparing for upcoming exams or tests. Encourage students with a positive and motivational outlook.
Tutors for the following subjects; math, science, spelling, language arts, and social studies.
Tutoring takes place Monday thru Friday 3pm - 6pm. Volunteers are expected to make a once a week commitment.
Qualifications:
- General proficiency in basic educational subject areas.
- Experience working with youth in tutoring or mentoring type of role.
- Ability to motivate and provide direction, as well as excitement for teaching or tutoring.
- Patience and understanding of barriers faced by school-aged youth with multiple life transitions and how this affects their focus, learning, behavior and consistency.
- Must be able to work with youth from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Make a minimum of a 6 month commitment
All volunteers will also attend a one-hour on site orientation and pre-training with supervisor that covers an introduction to the program and the position and addresses cultural competency and best practices for working with at-risk youth. Continued guidance will be provided by supervisor and on-site program staff.
