Family Village Issaquah is directly meeting the needs of the community members and FVI housing residents through providing parenting classes, computer education, financial planning classes, counseling services, child care, community space, and housing.

The Afterschool Program provides a safe and positive environment for school aged kids in the afternoon. The goal is to work with students so that they gain confidence and further develop their academic or artistic skills and to teach them in the importance of pride in their community. Providing homework assistance or guided instruction in the field of arts and environmental awareness as a safe place to be after school is essential to a successful educational and community experience.

  • Interact with school age children and promote positive peer interaction amongst the children.
  • One on one or small group assistance with homework or academic needs.

Volunteers must commit to at least one day a week during the following times:

Monday -Thursday 2:45pm - 5pm


  • General proficiency in basic educational subject areas.
  • Experience working with youth in tutoring or mentoring type of role.
  • Ability to motivate and provide direction, as well as excitement for teaching or tutoring.
  • Patience and understanding of barriers faced by school-aged youth with multiple life transitions and how this affects their focus, learning, behavior and consistency.
  • Must be able to work with youth from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Able to make a minimum of a 6 month commitment

All volunteers will also attend a one-hour site orientation and pre-training with supervisor that covers an introduction to the program and the position and addresses cultural competency and best practices for working with at-risk youth. Continued guidance will be provided by supervisor and on-site program staff.
