ORGANIZATION: YWCA of Seattle-King County-Snohomish County

  • 12 people are interested

The YWCA Family Village Issaquah After-School Program is an on-site after-school program that serves primary and secondary students living in our ethnically-diverse affordable housing community. The program offers a supervised, caring environment where youth can connect with tutors and mentors, as well as enjoy educational and recreational activities. Our program promotes racial equity, academic achievement, and social-emotional learning.

We strive to provide our youth with consistency. Thus, we seek volunteers who are interested in supporting our after-school programming at least once per week for at least four months. Having a regular, ongoing presence in the program helps volunteers build strong relationships with our youth.

Our program runs Mondays-Fridays, from 4-6pm.

Duties

  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor to students
  • Prepare and facilitate activities (e.g. arts and crafts) with students
  • Greet students when they enter the space
  • Engage students in conversation and activities
  • Assist with snack distribution
  • Promote positive peer interactions among students
  • Provide one-on-one and small group assistance with homework or academic needs
  • Redirect negative behavior and resolve conflicts between students
  • Maintain a positive attitude and remain patient with students
  • Help prepare and clean space

Desired Skills:

  • Experience working with youth in tutoring or mentoring role
  • Experience working with communities of color
  • Ability to motivate and provide direction, as well as excitement for teaching or tutoring
  • Patience and understanding of barriers faced by youth with multiple life transitions and how this affects their focus, learning, behavior, and consistency
  • Must be able to support and affirm youth with diverse cultures, racial and ethnic identities, religious beliefs, sexual orientations, abilities, and countries of origin
  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Able to make a four month commitment

All volunteers will also attend a site orientation with supervisor that covers an introduction to the program and the position. Continued coaching will be provided by supervisor and on-site program staff.
