Each year, nearly 2,000 adult newcomers from around the world come to Emily Griffith Technical College to learn English. Our dedicated volunteers bring skills and receiving-community perspectives that assist our students with the process of learning English, adjusting to a different country, and integrating into a new culture. Volunteers assist in the classroom, help with tutoring, help students in the ESL computer lab, and facilitate conversation groups.
All incoming volunteers must attend a two-hour orientation and pass a Colorado Bureau of Investigation background check.
Many of our students have been resettled through the United States Refugee Program after fleeing war or persecution in their home countries. These students come from many troubled areas, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burma, Somalia, Eritrea, and Democratic Republic of the Congo, among others. Students who are not refugees have immigrated to the US from places such as Mexico, South America, Asia, and Eastern Europe in search of new opportunities. No matter where they are from, all of our students are eager to learn and interact with members of the receiving community.
