Each year, adult newcomers from around the world come to Emily Griffith Technical College to learn English. Our volunteers do not teach classes, rather, they provide in-classroom support to both the students and the professional, paid instructors.

Our dedicated volunteers bring skills and receiving-community perspectives that assist our students with the process of learning English, adjusting to a different country, and integrating into a new culture. Volunteers assist in professionally staffed adult ESL classrooms and helping students in the ESL computer lab. A limited number of online classes are also in need of volunteer support. All incoming volunteers must attend a two-hour orientation and pass a background check prior to assisting in a classroom.

Many of our students have been resettled through the United States Refugee Program after fleeing war or persecution in their home countries. These students come from many troubled areas, including Afghanistan, Burma, Eritrea, and Democratic Republic of the Congo, among others. Students who are not refugees have immigrated to the US from places such as Mexico, South America, Asia, and Eastern Europe in search of new opportunities. No matter where they are from, all of our students are eager to learn and interact with members of the receiving community.

About Colorado Refugee ESL Program at Emily Griffith Technical College

Location:

1860 Lincoln St., Denver, CO 80203, US

Mission Statement

The Colorado Refugee English as a Second Language program, housed at Emily Griffith Technical College, strives to deliver high-quality English language instruction to newly arrived refugees. Caring teachers, administrators and volunteers throughout our organization provide the means for refugee students to obtain the acculturation, communication and literacy skills that are critical to survival and success in a new country.

Description

The Colorado Refugee ESL (CRESL) program at Emily Griffith Technical College provides English language instruction to newly arrived refugees. Refugees who cannot attend classes study in a home setting with a volunteer tutor. The majority of the adult refugees who come to Colorado each year spend some time studying in the CRESL program. Most of the refugees who study in the home tutor program are women with small children, persons with disabilities or their full-time caretakers, and seniors. At any given time, at least 30 refugees in the Denver area are waiting for the instructional services of a volunteer in-home tutor.
