Program:
The Employment & Career Services (ECS) program at JFS is a program that was established to provide support to community members affected with job loss. The ECS Family Opportunity Program is a partnership program between JFS and CHW (Community Housing Works). It is designed to provide on-site case management, English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching, employment and career services, budget and credit management, as well as educational resources to residents living in CHW affordable housing complexes. The majority of residents at the Carlsbad location are in need of ESL instruction.
Goal of Position:
Instruct and assist language learners improve English comprehension and proficiency so they can seek employment and educational opportunities with greater ease.

Tasks/responsibilities:
- Work with JFS staff to develop an effective ESL curriculum for this program
- Provide ESL instruction to program participants once a week
- Teach conversational English, English pronunciation, and some professional lingo/business terms, idioms and slang
- Help participants correctly interpret job applications
- Assist participants to create resumes in English
- Provide guidance to participants in answering job interview questions in English with confidence
- Instruct participants through the job search and application process with English proficiency
- Keep track of all volunteer hours and report hours to staff once a month
Qualifications:
- Prior experience teaching ESL classes
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to describe accomplishments and skills in an effective manner
- Must be dedicated, reliable, patient, and compassionate
- Must have familiarity with diverse populations and individuals with limited financial resources and job opportunities
- Must enjoy helping people from diverse backgrounds
Requirements:
- Prior experience teaching ESL classes
- Must be able to provide own transportation and work independently
- Complete a volunteer application at www.jfssd.org/volapp
- Attend a JFS volunteer interview with JFS staff
- Agree to background check, reference check, and privacy & security policy
Time Commitment:
Once a week, 2-hour classes, for a total of 3 months. Class time based on the Volunteer’s Schedule. Need one class in the morning (flexible between 9am-12pm) and one evening class between 5:30-7:30 pm.
