About

More than half of all people over 65 have hypertension (high blood pressure). There are usually no symptoms, which is why the condition has been dubbed "the silent killer." Uncontrolled high blood pressure is a major risk factor for strokes, heart attacks, heart failure and kidney disease. Working from protocols developed jointly by DFTA and the NYC Department of Health, Keep on Track volunteers use blood pressure monitors to measure seniors’ blood pressure and explain readings at senior centers and other locations throughout the City. Participants benefit from this program because measurements are taken in-between doctor’s visits, offering participants the convenience of not having to travel to a medical facility and the comfort of knowing their status in the meantime. Since training is provided, no prior medical experience is necessary.

DFTA seeks patient individuals who are dependable, punctual and can explain information clearly to seniors. If that sounds like you, consider becoming a Keep on Track volunteer and learn an important skill that can help save lives.

Tasks:

  • Take blood pressure measurements using digital monitors
  • Explain what the measurements mean to participants
  • Record measurement data in participant records
  • Uphold the values of the Keep on Track Program

Requirements:

  • Possess good interpersonal skills
  • Exhibit empathy for older adults
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with program participants
  • Dependability and punctuality
  • Possess entry level computer and data entry skills
  • Willingness to volunteer at multiple program sites
  • Attend a DFTA Volunteer Information Session

Skills Preferred:

  • Ability to speak languages other than English desired, but not required
  • Possess computer skills for the management of a data entry program

Training:

  • Must participate in a 2-hour training session (A minimum of 6 volunteers is required in order for a training to be held.)

Time Commitment:

  • Volunteers serve flexible days Monday-Friday, and flexible hours between 9:00am-Noon
  • Being available to serve multiple times a week is highly desirable
  • Keep on Track sessions run approximately 2 hours
  • On average, volunteers serve 3-4 hours a month
  • Minimum one year commitment strongly requested
