Objective

To continue MLK's mission for social justice by volunteering to role play in an activity. "Poverty Simulation"-This Is America is an experiential learning event with prepared scenarios for people to rethink poverty. Volunteers are needed to participate in the experience that will help shed light on typical families trying to survive from month to month.

Location

St. Paul's Chapel

Responsibilities

  • Arrive on time
  • Carefully read in English your role and debrief with your assigned group in the first 10 minutes of event before simulation begins
  • Play out role accordingly and maturely
  • Stay attentive and respect the 15 minute boundaries set by the event
  • Participation in debrief discussion required

Qualifications

  • Ability to act with cultural sensitivity
  • The capacity to shed personal bias and experience
    (i.e. role play a different race, gender, or occupation during this event)

Mode of Engagement

Parishioner-to-Community, Community-to-Community, Parishioner-to-Parishioner, and Community-to-Parishioner

Time Commitment

Two and a half hours is the required time for this activity.
