Healthy Cities Tutoring matches volunteers of all ages with students who are struggling to find success in school. Last year, we provided tutors for over 500 children at thirteen K-8 schools in San Carlos and Redwood City. We continue to grow each school year and welcome your help to support a child in need of tutoring and mentoring. We never have enough tutors for every child on our waiting list.
Volunteers are asked to tutor just one hour per week, and the time can be arranged to fit your schedule. We place tutors in schools in San Carlos and Redwood City. You may choose the school that is convenient for you and the tutoring generally takes place at the school site. No prior tutoring experience is needed and the rewards are enormous!
Becoming a volunteer tutor will make a difference in a child’s life and in your life as well. As one of our tutors said "This has been such a great experience - I don't really have just one word to describe it. That one hour a week is the most important hour of the week for me." We could not agree more and we hope you will consider joining us!

Healthy Cities Tutoring helps kids who struggle to succeed in school. Community volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for children to improve their academic success, engagement in learning and self-esteem.
Healthy Cities Tutoring is a volunteer-based tutoring program that currently supports students in kindergarten through eighth grade in seven schools in San Carlos and one school in Redwood City. The mission of the organization is to help kids who struggle to succeed in school. Community volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for children to improve their academic success, engagement in learning and self-esteem. The services are provided at no cost to the families who have children enrolled.
It is our goal to serve every student in need and ensure that every child referred to us for services receives a tutor. We are working to serve more of the students on our waiting lists and reach more of the students who are below grade level in our schools.
The tutor and student meet once a week for an hour. This is a one-on-one relationship where child has his or her "own" special tutor. The tutor and student work on reading, math, study skills and homework depending on the student’s needs.
We'll work with your schedule.
